Cassius had found a spot to sit by the docks, watching the pirates, revolutionaries and various vagrants mill about. He had even observed Marine units wandering the docks, though less as security and more as simple visitors to the area, perhaps using Baltigo as a pit stop on a journey. Though the three factions didn't seem to intermingle, they didn't cause one another much trouble either. It seemed there was an unspoken agreement between all to only cause trouble if they were prepared to face the full wrath of Baltigo's underworld. The longer Cassius stayed on the island, the more he learned of these silent, unspoken rules and agreements among its citizens. In the past few days, since his meeting with Ursa and his brawl in the Blood Bowl, he had learned more about the secret world he never knew existed than he knew about his own island back home, under the sea. The reach such an unorganized organization had was truly inspiring and yet horribly terrifying. For the right price everything was provided, yet piss off the wrong person with the right connections and a judgement far worse than anything the World Government could doll out would be brought upon you swiftly. It made his scales itch as he sat at the bench, watching workers, pirates, marines, revolutionaries and general vagrants mill about.

He sat back, relaxing a bit but still on guard nonetheless, it was simply his default frame of mind. Though he had no reason to fear for his life, he couldn't shake the feeling of unease he had around humans at all times. Perhaps one day he'd be able to sit calmly amongst them, not because of some fabeled peace agreement or wide-sweeping acceptance of his kind, but because he carried a certain degree of clout, enough to turn away anyone who would dare insult him. Reaching into his coat pocket, Cassius pulled out his pipe and a single match. Raising it to his beard, the tendrils lifted the end to his mouth as he ignited the match with a snap of his fingers and brought the small flame to the basin of the pipe. A few short puffs of smoke later and he sighed heavily, smoke escaping through his mouth like a small nimbus. His beard held his pipe, a single tendril wrapped around it while his arms lay outstretched across the back of the bench.

He tilted his head back, staring up at the azure sky. It was a beautiful day, lofty white clouds floated high and leisurely without even the faintest notion of a storm. His exhales of smoke twisting upward, reaching higher and higher to join their brethren but extinguishing to nothing long before they got so high. The sun shined brightly, warming Cassius's cold blood and a stiff but warm breeze rushed across the surface of the water, keeping the air moving and full of life even in such a thick crowd of people. It was a beautiful day and yet, in the pit of his stomach, something told him it'd be an unforgettable one all the same. Whether that was for better or worse remained to be seen.

Just Another Day

The docks of Baltigo in an undisclosed, specific location were the place to be right now. While many factions walked through here, they rarely had anything to do with each other, and even rarer anything to do with him, but it didn't stop Devroux from wanted to enjoy it. The residual burning in his lungs flared with the inhalation of the cool ocean breeze, but the internal pain was the only thing left of Clovis Adder. Even though the mink was prepared for the sting of the ocean air, the true intent in coming to such a wide, open place at this time of day was to flaunt his superiority in the faces of lower class criminals. He was wanted on Baltigo, mostly to those in the underworld, but there were few that'd be willing to take on someone that had not only beaten a colleague of Garrolt Taylor's, but beaten a devil fruit user as well - though, no one except him and Noctis would know that that was purely a fluke.

However, in all of his narcissistic glory, Devroux had forgotten that daytime meant one thing: Sunlight. The sun pelted down on the docks and the mink couldn't help but feel its wrath on his pitch black fur. But even worse than that was the pain it inflicted on his eyes. At some point he'd just rationalize and get sunglasses or a pair of goggles, but the sun wouldn't force him to cave so easily.

Sitting with his Calico scarf doubling as a face wrap, Jackal examined the trades among the docks from a pile of empty cargo crates that we're due for collection from a local shipping company for re-use. Until that day, in this moment, they'd act as a pragmatic spot for observing the flow of traffic, in out of the docks, focusing specifically on the Second District faces trades. It'd become his obsession as of late, though the woman known as Mother and himself had never met, Jackal felt as if silently, they'd be playing a game of chess from the moment he'd stepped on Baltigo. Time was ticking for her, the twins she'd promised to the First District Kingpin was nowhere to be found, and Jackal had them stashed away on his ship, with the only lead being the broken 'Knight' that Jackal sent back to deliver the message. Though the face wrap covered the dog like traits of his temple, Jackal's tail was left to fly freely, as finding Minks on Baltigo wasn't an odd occurrence as it was on Sandy or Drum. Baltigo was a melting pot of races and cultures, Fishmen, Mink, Long-Armed to name a few, were the least of the races to be mentioned. However, like everywhere else in the world, the racism brewed over. For Mink's specifically, no one ever messed with them in fear of angering the mercenary Kingpin, Ursa.

Sitting across from his position on the crates, as his feet dangled over the crates edge, a Fishman who'd be about ten feet to his right, ignited his pipe as he'd examined the docks. Jackal actually had arrived finding the man sitting idle, steadily watching the flow of traffic as well but didn't really put much interest towards his existence until the smell of tobacco came overloading his nostrils. The charcoal like scent was so pungent, that the Mink could've almost tasted it's scent on his own palette. "Shishishi... You should ease up on the tobacco. This world is already filled with enough things wanting us dead... Less we die to our habits as well." Jackal declared, after his trademark chuckle, at times, the Mink just couldn't help it. It wasn't that he found anything funny particularly, it'd become an habitual utterance to him at this point.

Noctis limped behind Devroux, putting as little pressure on his mangled ankle as possible. The docks of Baltigo were busy with folk from all walks of life, and although he and Devroux were wanted men in the underworld, that same reputation was likely to protect them in the open daylight. Stopping to rest his wound, Noctis sheltered his eyes from the sun with his hand, his teeth gritting as his foot throbbed. From the outside, the injury didn't seem overly serious, but the internal damage was anything but benign. Noctis didn't want to admit it or show it, but if he didn't get it treated soon, his foot wasn't long for this world.

Taking a seat on a vacant wooden crate, the relief was immediate as he could finally see past the pain for a bit. It was still agony, but it was an agony he could tolerate for now. The scent of smoke lingered in the air, and it brought Noctis back to reality. Things had seemed to be moving exceptionally fast in recent days, but the scene reminded him that life was just a day to day occurrence for many.

Noctis observed the scene that lay before him, as another mink and a fishman seemed to chat it up. Noctis wasn't close enough to discern the topic, but he could notice the smoke coming from the fishman's pipe. The wisps of light grey gas flowed like ribbons, and it reminded Noctis of his newly acquired abilities. Perhaps out of curiosity or whim, Noctis took the opportunity to focus on the smoke itself, just to see the the depths of his influence. After a moment, Noctis was able to get a firm grasp on the nature of the smoke, manipulating it into a sphere before dispersing it. It was enough to appear out of the ordinary, but it would be hard to pinpoint exactly who or what caused it.

Cassius turned his head towards the mink who had spoken to him, already on guard as most people who bothered to speak with him were the type to yell at him instead. He raised the spot of his scaly skin that would have been where an eyebrow was on a human in mild curiosity as he looked at this face wrapped creature on the boxes, a furry tail swishing about on the crates behind him. Cassius turned back to face the sea for a long minute, puffing hard on his pipe and crossing his arms in thought before speaking at Jackal but towards the water,
Funny, dying of my habits sounds far more pleasant than at the end of someone else's sword or with a rope around my neck. I'd rather live free how I want than-

Cassius stopped in mild surprise as the smoke from his pipe suddenly...disappeared. One moment it was there and the next it just seemed to pop out of existence like a bubble. Of course that was impossible because it was smoke and in fact not a bubble. He took the pipe from his mouth with a single tentacle, transferring it to his hand seamlessly. He inspected the pipe, checking the underside, shaft and bowl to make sure it was functioning properly. The tobacco was still lit so he had no problems there. Finally, giving up Cassius simply stuck the thing back in his mouth and continued his smoke.
Seems you're not the only one here who has a problem with my habits.
Cassius said flatly, gazing around the docks for anything that seemed out of the ordinary. Truth be told he had no idea whether there was trickery afoot or simply the wind acting strangely. Regardless, it made the scales on the back of his neck stand on end.

Just Another Day

As Devroux sat idly on the dock enjoying the bittersweet relaxation the day had brought, his alone time was interrupted by the squeaks of the dock ringing behind him, different from those the traditional marines and pirates made. These squeaks were the signature of his recently acquired ally, Noctis, and his gruesomely wounded ankle. Having allies in this world were always good to have, but in situations such as this, they could very easily impede the solo relaxation. However, the interruption wasn't without its benefits either. Noctis had recently added new abilities to his repertoire and they were interesting to watch when the occasion allowed for it. Devil fruits were something to learn about, but the control over the smoke he displayed was just interesting on a most basic level.

Devroux's eyes followed the trail of smoke that Noctis had been manipulating, leading him to a fishman with a face covered in tentacles. As a mink he wasn't a stranger to strange looking creatures, nor was he even a stranger to fishmen, but this one was ugly right up there next to Noctis' busted ankle. Control over this surprise was important, as Devroux wasn't the type to be needlessly rude, especially based on appearance, but the ugly fishman was also conversing with a covered person next to him. Normally a person wearing such heavy clothing wouldn't even warrant a glance, but this one had a tail.

Once again, appearance mattered very little in Devroux's eyes, especially considering that he knew how it felt to be treated differently by the lesser minks that surrounded him, but the tail meant something more. Minks might be more common here than they were on Sandy Island, but he didn't have as much face time with them as he would admittedly appreciate.

Unfortunately, Devroux wasn't really the talkative type, at least not without reason. It did, however, make them the targets for eavesdropping while they were close.

"Shishishi... That's an interesting creed to live by. Most Lesser Minks cling to their lives over morality-" Jackal responded, peering over to the stranger, his words frozen as he'd realise that the tobacco abuser was of the Fishman race. "Your braver hearted than most." Jackal concluded, nodding to himself in conclusion. "I feel the same way. Everyone's journey must come to an end eventually. Why not indulge in the things that make you happy." Jackal concluded. The Mink's keen eyes picked up on the disappearance of the smoke exhaust from the Fishman's pipe, and much like his Sixth Sense had been sharpened to respond, Jackal immediately noticed the long legged male that had entered into the area, sitting about twenty-feet from his position on the same stockpile of wooden crates, his focus seemingly consumed with neither himself or the Fishman but zeroed into something much far beyond their being. Not too far from him was another personage, around 5'10 with a coat of thin black fur covering his body, and what appeared to be a black cloak draped over his body. Most intriguingly, he had the air of a noble, the way the man stood, you could've tell their was a level of confidence the stranger carried within himself. "That's a nice parlour trick stranger." Jackal stated chuckling, peering over towards the seated Long Leg Tribesman, pinning the strange phenomena's occurrence on him, regardless of he'd own up to it or not, it wasn't a concern of the Mink.

His head, much like his attention would turn back to overlooking the docks, "The people of Baltigo all live to fulfil their habits too. Sex, Drugs, Murder and of course theft. It's a nation filled with selfishness and greed. Seems to be Lesser Mink's obsession by my observations, Shishishi..." Jackal stated, trailing off into a laugh. "That's fine too. That's how the Kingpin's maintain their hold... as long as they are desires, they'll be those to make a profit on providing the service." Jackal said. Extending his finger into the crowd, the Mink pointed out, a bunch of merchants who were cracking their whips against a slave's back, as the Marines notably with their proud naval caps on watched on the side-lines biting their teeth. "Justice is as convenient as is survival." Jackal concluded.

Noctis realized he was caught when the overly perceptive mink directed his gaze towards him, commending his feat. Noctis didn't have much intention to bring to much suspicion to himself, so he just smiled and went along with the charade, giving a respectful nod towards the pair as if to say thanks.

Noctis could tell Devroux had a passing fascination with the mink. Perhaps it was simply due to their shared kinship, or maybe he felt something more. The man who had easily deducted that it was Noctis who manipulated the smoke certainly wasn't normal, but then again, neither were they. Regardless of everyone's relative importance, in the moment they were simply four men looking to relax outside of the watchful gaze of the world at large, and it was something Noctis greatly appreciated. A moment of humanity outside of affiliations or debts.

It would have been a perfect scene if not for the fact that Noctis was still in incredible pain. He knew of a few doctors that could handle his injury, but none that were readily available. Goldov was a picky, eccentric man who no doubt wouldn't help Noctis without some exorbitant cost, and his he hadn't seen any of his companions since he had met Devroux.

Reaching up to his shoulder, Noctis unclasped his cape, tearing a lengthy thin strip from the bottom before re-buckling it. Leaning down, he carefully tied the fabric tightly around his ankle, as a sort of makeshift splint. It wasn't anywhere near the quality or effectiveness of a trained professional, but growing up fighting meant he knew enough to make a makeshift, rudimentary splint. Just to limit his movement if anything else.

Cassius nodded as Jackal spoke, Ay, my thoughts exactly. Spend your life worrying about all the things that might kill ya and before you know it, you're dead without ever having actually lived a life at all. As Jackal's attention changed, so did Cassius's. He followed the Mink's gaze to the stacked crates close by where a young, long legged individual sat nursing an severely busted ankle.
Oi, so it was you messing with my smoke, almost let the wind take the fall for that one boy. Cassius said with a neutral tone. He wasn't mad, but he wasn't exactly pleased with being the target of hijinks either.
A citizen of this cesspool recently told me Baltigo is an island built in sin and run on sin. At the time I had no idea just how little of an exaggeration that was. Cassius stared at the slavers in silence, his hand resting against the back of the bench tightening into a fist. An inner rage burned beneath the fishman's calm exterior as he watched the Marines look on with no more interest in the blasphemy than if it had been a bird pecking at trash.

Having enough, he quickly turned away and gazed back out across the sea. Almost immediately he could feel the soothing song of the ocean, the breeze sweeping across his flesh and scales. He closed his eyes for a long moment, crossing his arms in front of himself to keep from acting rashly and making a mistake. A single plume of smoke rose with the dropping of his chest and exhale. Opening his eyes again he turned to Jackal and looked the mink up and down once more.
So, who or what are you hiding from friend? He said in reference to the face scarf the mink wore.

Noctis' smoke tricks got the attention of the ugly fishman and the undercover mink, but neither of them looked too displeased nor did they seem that impressed by it either. It was interesting, but the world they lived in was covered in people with strange abilities and godlike strengths, so it was only natural that some of them might have seen a few other tricks similar to the ones Noctis was displaying, if not even more wondrous. Their attention on Noctis was brief before they returned to the prior conversation, which twisted into words about Baltigo.

To the eyes of Devroux, these two hadn't seemed like they knew each other from a previous occasion, but they both held similar ideas of what Baltigo was. A cesspool of sin, where murderers, rapists, and other living filth congregated. This idea was the reason that he had come to Baltigo initially and now, after only a few weeks, he had added to the body count that Baltigo was known for. It truly was a just as the rumors had described it.

"It's why I came," Dev spoke, not knowing if either would pay attention to another stranger rambling next to them. "Baltigo is known for its criminal population, but with everyone fighting for their life, it seemed like a good opportunity to learn something about survival."

He wasn't expecting either of them to listen, let alone care, but an opportunity to meet a mink outside of Zou was an opportunity worth taking. He wasn't there to fawn over another mink either, but potentially learn from one who had also been living in a world that was generally hostile towards their kind. Though, as it were, the fishman's words gave off a sense of experience and wisdom that made him seem worth talking to as well.

"Who said anything about hiding? I like Calico scarfs." Jackal stated, his response itself was cheeky and a hint at his identity, though not many knew him by this alias as yet, even in the newspapers, he'd be reported as Bandit King, the marines not even truly knowing his name. "I'm no hero. As much as I understand the concept of evil for me to preach about right or wrong would be hypocritical." Jackal continued on, not brushing past the man's question about his identity but leaving his initial response open ending to divert from the issue of his being. "After all, I'm just a Bandit overlooking the town filled with demons." Jackal concluded smirking widely. "Hopefully... It isn't like that old saying, 'Those who stare into the abyss eventually become apart of it.'" Jackal slid in at the last moment. Turning his head towards a little bit behind Noctis direction, curiosity filled the Mink's with several questions for the Bat Mink. "Until recently, you would've been the last Mink it'd scene since Zou. How do you find this world on a whole?" Jackal inquired. Staring towards the sky, not really addressing anyone at this point, "At first... It was truly racist. Because of my skin and appearance, tons of humans made fun of me, others even threatened my life." Jackal said smirking the whole way as his nose poked out through the  head-wrap, his head staring diagonally at the skies.

"Eliminate all humans I thought." Jackal continued. "Then... Would you believe it? A Lesser Mink it'd known for less than a month sacrificed her life to save my own." Jackal stated. "Even on Zou... The division where someone from the Night Side would risk their life for a Morning Dweller would be impossible. It'd be akin to that." Jackal concluded. Jackal wanted to inquire about the man's abilities but at this point, he deemed that as extremely rude.

As the mink and Devroux spoke, Noctis couldn't help but stay silent. He truly had nothing to say in the matter and didn't really know much about minkmen culture or prejudices at all. As a slave, all races were treated generally the same, so he never gave much thought to anything like racism. Curious though, Noctis listened along and nodded.

As the conversation continued, Noctis began to drift in an out of the conversation. While those involved certainly seemed interesting enough to converse with, his pain combined with the lack of valuable input caused Noctis' mind to wander. Rather than seem rude, Noctis simply focused on maintaining moments of eye contact to appear engaged. What the mink was saying truly seemed to be heartfelt and meaningful, but Noctis just couldn't muster up the willpower to take any of it in.

Cassius turned as Devroux began to speak, noticing the tall, winged black Mink approach. He raised a curious, scaly eyebrow in interest. Another Mink, how interesting and yet, somewhat unsettling. He suddenly felt very alone and very isolated, it wasn't a new feeling, considering he was usually around hordes of humans, but somehow being a noticeable outsider among a group of outsiders was...unnerving.
Threatened your life huh? Cassius asked with a smirk.
I've found humans seem to favor bottles. When they throw them they don't even have to hit you so any drunk or child can get a clean shot with the exploding shards. Not to mention humans always seem to have a bottle on hand. I guess that's one way to shield yourself from this place. Cassius said with a shrug before allowing the Minkmen to continue their conversation. He listened carefully as he was extremely unfamiliar with Mink culture and history. The mention of a place called Zou and the way Jackal spoke about it was enough for him to infer that it was some place with a large majority of Minks, though Cassius himself had never heard of it. In fact, come to think of it, this was the first time the fishman had really interacted with Minks outside of fist fights. It was a very interesting and informative experience to say the least, two groups of outsiders and then whatever the kid nursing the ankle was, all coming together for no real reason yet drawn by something.

Speaking of the longleg, Cassius turned over his shoulder to look at Noctis and study the man. He seemed to be feigning interest in the current conversation between the two Mink, which from Cassius's point of view was completely understandable. His ankle looked swollen and grotesquely purple, clearly more damaged on the inside than the external wounds let on. Cassius stroked his beard as he searched the docks, finding some stray pieces of lumber on the edge. He rose from the bench, offering a brief grumble of, Excuse me. though he was confident the two Mink wouldn't mind. Walking over to the old lumber he looked around for anyone who might claim it as their own before measuring out two pieces of roughly equal length. He delivered two hard blows to the lumber with his hand in a cutting formation, his years of training in Fishman Karate making it no more difficult than if he were cutting through butter. The wood splintered and he seized the two pieces, looking them over and deciding they would do. He then approached Noctis with both and said,
I'm no doctor, but I've broken enough bones in my day to know how to splint. You have anything to tie these together? It won't be pretty, but you'll at least be able to walk on it to an actual doctor. the fishman said between puffs of smoke.

The ugly fishman commented about how humans like to use bottles, but it wasn't something that Devroux had to personally deal with. He may be full of narcissistic tendencies, but the mink was far from lacking self-awareness. He knew how dangerous he looked, and it was one of the reasons he wore most of his weaponry as casually as he did, nor did he diminish the demonic visage by wearing clothing of the lesser minks. All of it was a show of dominance towards anyone that might be looking, which meant that so far in his travels he'd only had to have dealt with various looks.

"I've never been attacked," he began, "at least not for my race or the way I look. Even with that truth, the world is a lot different towards me than those back on Zou." Dev took a second to unfurl his wings and gesture towards his nude, furred body. "The black sheen and wings were kind of rare and made me a bit popular back home. It was a culture shock visiting the first island after leaving."

The mink pondered back on his brief stay on Drum. He had dealt with a large amount of hatred for what he was, but had also met someone of the lesser minks that showed him kindness.

"I've traveled to only a few islands in the Grand Line so far, each having their own take on my being a mink. The people of Sandy Island gave me looks of almost confusion, for the most part, as if I was just an oddity. The people of Baltigo, so far, don't seem to care too much given the melting pot of criminal activity that it is. Those of Drum, however, were hostile and didn't want anything to do with me. Save for one. The man who taught me to be a blacksmith, actually."

It was kind of long-winded, but Dev did appreciate the momentary spotlight. His story was short, but it was decently eventful.

"I haven't ever truly hated humans. The fact that they view me so differently from location to location reaffirms my confidence in that ideal. Everyone earns respect individually, not as a race."

"Shishishishi..." Jackal exclaimed breaking out into laughter. "That's a pretty egotistical way of viewing the world. Respect? They're Lesser Mink's who would shoot you dead in your path. In their eyes, we're not living beings. We're monsters." Jackal retorted, truly amused by the man's outlook. "I'm truly sorry however for bursting out in laughter, how rude of me. It's just I met another Mink recently, and I just couldn't help but thought, 'Ya'll are the exact opposites.' She has no self-esteem at all. Your confidence would make the moon seem small. You do have a nice fur, I will give you that much." Jackal concluded. This was the first time the two Minks had met, and it'd already seem as if destiny was setting them up on opposing sides. He, who views himself as the pedigree and he, who views himself as the survivor. "As for being popular back home, I was an outcast so even after leaving the island... Being enslaved on Zou... It was from one form of oppression to another." Jackal stated.

Turning his attention back towards the slavers, who we're beating the slaves bloody, almost leaving them unconscious from the blows. Removing his face mask, the Mink would tie the golden and black polkadot calico scarf around his neck, revealing his shiny golden fur coat that covered his dog like ears. Smirking devilishly, "I think this is where I'll take my leave. Not like I can save them and just come back here for a nice chat. As much as they have no connection to me, I'm just not the 'Watch the world burn type.' " Jackal stated, lunging off the wooden boxes to fall several feet. Releasing two quick charges consecutively, within moments Jackal had closed the distance between himself and the slavers. Once the distance had been closed, Jackal slapped his leg across the slavers face. With three quick movements, he'd break the chains with hands, minimising the explosive charges as he broke the shackles, one to conceal the true extent of his abilities and two, to avoid drawing too much attention.

After-all, with the speed Jackal had been moving at, the only people would've known he'd just descended from almost twenty-five meters away would've been his former buddies from the upper peer. "Don't just sit there... Get going!" Jackal shouted at the slaves. His words liberated them, sending them dashing down the dockside. The other slavers turned their attention towards the Mink, this time with their weapons drawn and itching for blood but their anger was quelled, as they'd realised who the Mink was, before Jackal dashed off again. "Y-Y-Y Your the Bandit King! You're the one whose been picking a fight with Mother from the Second! Stand down boys... This fucker has 300,000,000 Million on his head. Leave him be. It's only a matter of time before Mother leaves him dead and tossed in sea." the slaver shouted, his breathing increasing heavily at the Mink's presence. Shooting his glance towards his new acquaintances, Jackal turned, winking to the racial mismatch and shooting off through the crowd, being lost with the huddle crowd, due his petite figure.

Exit.
